Can We Please Stop the Pizza Parties?
Spending a couple of years in Korean hagwons has exposed me to the harsh realities of the dreaded pizza party. For the uninitiated, the pizza party is the preferred choice by schools and students in Korea when saying farewell to a class. With each departing class, comes the obligatory pizza fest.
All the fixings are there... You've got the 5,000 won cardboard pizza from "Imo's Pizza Yummy," yes that's really the name of the place we order from.
You've got what, seems to be pickles. Seriously, pickles and pizza? Really?
You've got a two liter of Coke, which I wouldn't have a problem with except for the fact that within seconds of twisting off the cap, some little wiseass always runs over and proceeds to perform the most grotesque exhibition of backwashing known to man. More grotesque however, is that no one seems to care.
You've got, my personal favorite, the shrimp flavored chips. As if a slice of Imo's Pizza Yummy, pickles, and a glass of food particle enhanced Coke weren't enough, shrimp (yes, the crustacean) flavored chips have to get thrown in the mix.
Lastly, you've got the actual process of eating this feast from the Gods. No talking. Just blank stares directed toward the front of the room. You might get the occasional "Mmmm," or "Teacher, do you want my half-eaten crust?" But that’s typically it.
It’s all together a bit awkward, uncomfortable even... Folks, this must stop! Let me be the first to declare that the pizza party is finished. It's gotten old. It's over! Your time has passed. So I salute you Mr. Pizza Party, it was fun while it lasted.
As a replacement, I have come to terms with Kyochon Chicken. Fried chicken parties! They have promised to liberate my classroom from years of pizza party oppression. The new menu includes; fried chicken, some tasty little dippy sauces, shredded cabbage with a mix of mayo and ketchup, and pickled radishes. Ok, that's pretty weird too. But it’s a step in the right direction...
